Two parts to this puppy: The Freakout and The Run.
This morning, when I popped on Facebook, I saw that my friend had already run 4 miles. It was about 6:30am. Immediately I became jealous, because I love running in the morning. It's when I run best. My friend Anthony talks about "the perfect setup" for his runs and I have that, too. My ideal run goes thusly:
Wake up at 6am, go to the bathroom, puff on my inhaler, get geared up, maybe eat a little bit of banana and have a drink of water, go to the bathroom again (if necessary), turn on my iPod, walk around our circular driveway (condo complex), stretch for a couple minutes, start by 6:20ish.
The problem is, my wife works out in the morning (so I need to be here in case the kids get up) and I meet with my pastor two mornings a week. Also, you should know, I hate running after work/at night. So, when I looked at the weather this morning (63 degrees and beautiful) as opposed to tonight (80 degrees and hot), I started freaking out. At this point it was 6:37am and I almost went out and ran anyway (even though Julie wasn't home yet and I would have been late for work). Everything started falling apart in my head. "I'm never going to be able to train right for this half marathon! I HATE running after work! I can't do it! I HAVE to run in the morning! BLEH!"
So, Julie gets home and I kind of throw up on her. I'm like, "Listen, you've gotta make some sacrifices. Just 'til August. I can't run at night. I just can't do it. I'm sorry, but we have to work something out." She was understandably upset by my sudden demands, but let me freak out a little bit. You've gotta make some sacrifices? Jeepers creepers.
Thankfully I calmed down and realized - GASP - everything will be ok. I apologized and said, rationally, that we'll work it out. She graciously agreed that we will work it out. Disaster averted. Probably not the last freakout I'll have, though.
The Run
The plan was to run after the kids went to bed around 8pm. It'd be a little cooler by then and the sun would be lower. But, as I left work, it didn't feel as hot as I thought it would, so I changed it up. Got home a little before 5pm, geared up and headed out into the 80 degree heat to run 5k. The run was really uneventful (except seeing my friend Jimmy who just headed out to walk the dog!) and I finished in just over 34 minutes. Felt fine afterwards, though hot and in need of water badly. It was a little weird, too, to be out when SO many people were around. Walking, biking, driving, etc. I'm not used to it being so busy.
Quite the day, I suppose. A good one, I'd say.
Don't panic.
